Tracy's Tri Camp & Masters

We had over 25 swimmers in the pool on Monday night! The pool was temporarily turned into a wave pool ... The workout was freestyle focused, mid-distance and aerobic/threshold pace. About halfway through a couple lanes broke off to work on freestyle drills, great efforts by everyone!

Monday AM 1.28.13

Howdy swimmers:)-the week you've all been waiting for-Butterfly!! Tip of the day blog- to improve fly efficiency- do body dolphin drills with arms in front at shoulder width, pushing down and forward the chest gently while the hips flow upward-pulling the belly button up while the chest pushes, the legs stay together relaxed and NOT kicking(flowing from the hips); each time head comes up it should break the surface. Do lots of body dolphin drills adding one arm fly drills which you will be learning this week. Happy fly swimming!:) coach Lisa

Postal Meet

Lisa J, Ben, Jim and Brian S. showed up and rocked the one hour swim this morning! Also thanks to Jenna and Jessie for keeping splits ...

If you missed out on the fun and really want to give it a go, let the coach know at any of the workouts this week and we will do our best to accommodate you. Swims must be completed during January! If you plan on doing it, please bring a split sheet (found online at http://www.usms.org/longdist/1hr_3000_6000_splits.pdf ) and arrange for a counter to help out. You can also do this on your own time at any available lap swim. Good luck!

GSC OPEN

As most of you know - the GSC Open last weekend was a huge success! We had some amazing swims from the women's side and some stand-outs on the mens side too! The group (about 20 Masters, including all the coaches!) made it to at least 1 of the 3 sessions, and most made all three sessions. The GSC kiddos swam well too - maybe upwards of 40 kids competed? Overall, it was a successful meet. Look for an article to follow in the Empire later this week.

The hope for 2014 is to expand this meet and not only invite more teams to join, but actually have them join! We will be extending the invite to all of Alaska at the AK Masters Championship meet next month. If you have suggestions regarding the timeline, number of sessions, number or order of events offered, warm-up period / schedule, volunteers, etc. We would really like to hear from you. It would be best to get these in writing - email is perfect. If you have a problem remembering to send an email, tell one of the coaches at any of the workouts this week - we want to improve and expand!

For those of you who are thinking of attending the AK Championship meet (Masters ONLY) please continue to consider this! The meet dates are: 2/9-10 and will be held in Anchorage. Here is a link to the registration form...  https://www.clubassistant.com/club/meet_information.cfm?c=1816&smid=4424

MORE INFO COMING SOON!!!

I know many of you have enjoyed your MLK day, and perhaps many of you will continue to take a couple more days off from swimming to recuperate from this weekend (which is fine :-)), however practices resume TOMORROW (1/22) at 1pm at AGB pool - see you at the pool!

The Glacier Swim Club started a competitive swim program for master swimmers (19 and older) in November. Here, Juneau Masters coach Kristin Jones, left, talks to athletes during an evening swim at Dimond Park Aquatic Center on Wednesday. Over 40 adults are currently in the program and it is expected to keep growing through the first year. Team members will be swimming in the GSC Open this weekend. There has been a small masters option in Juneau for years but it has been restricted to three 1-hour practices downtown only at 5:30 a.m. GSC has expanded the program to nine practices per week at downtown and the Dimond Park Aquatic Center with early mornings, lunchtime, and evening options. The program is a great, healthy option for Juneau adults. Look for an upcoming story in sports next week. For more information on the masters program contact GSC at 523-0840.

Monday evening 1-14-13

Everyone had fantastic starts off the block tonight! The tenassee turns proved challenging, you have to go down deep and flip very fast or you'll find yourself floating up to the surface...

Announcements 1-14-13

Hello Juneau Masters!

I have a few announcements as we lead into this weekend and our first meet as GSC Masters!

For those of you that are competing for the first time in a swim meet I have a few reminders/tips:

  • Arrive at the pool roughly 1 1/2 hours before the meet start time. This allows plenty of time to relax, stretch, figure out your lane/heat, greet and chat with teamates, and be 100% ready for warm-ups when it's time to jump in.
  • A warm-up will be posted on a whiteboard at the pool, normally prior to racing it's a good idea to swim anywhere from 1,000 - 2,000 yards, depending on what events you are swimming, how your body works, and how long you have until you swim. If the posted warm-up isn't working for you, feel free to do what you need to do!
  • Lane etiquette is essential for a successful warm-up. Often lanes are crowded and the pool is wavy - please be aware of the other swimmers in your lane and their personal space. Master swimmers and Highschool swimmers will warm-up and cool down in seperate lanes per dual sanctioning guidelines.
  • Bring an extra towel, warm deck clothes to wear inbetween events, healthy snacks and drinks, extra goggles/cap, comfortable suit to race in, lots of enthusiasm and of course your cheering squad.
  • Know what events you are signed up for - mentally prepare for those events.
  • Don't do anything that will make you sore for this weekend - try to take the days leading up to the meet easy - don't take them completely off, but give yourself a break on Wednesday/Thursday.
  • This week while you are swimming, focus on doing legal turns, fast finishes and good starts. The coaches are happy to help with any questions or concerns you have regarding these ...
  • As far as relays go - we will be competing these - they will be deck seeded, which means you can come up with your own relays :-) We will probably do one relay per session - 200 Free, 200 Medley, 400 Free ... however these are subject to change.
For anyone that is not competing this weekend - it's a great weekend to come watch and cheer on your teamates! I will also mention that ALL of the current Master's coaches will be competing (Sara said she is doing it - although not signed up yet...).

Meet start times:

Friday: warm-up's start at 4:30 PM
              meet starts at 6:00 PM

Saturday: warm-up start at 7:30 AM
                  meet start at 9:00 AM

Saturday: warm-up start at 3:00 PM
                  meet start at 4:30 PM

If you have friends/family coming to watch, please tell them to arrive a few minutes before the start time, sitting for an hour and a half watching warm-ups isn't very fun for spectators...

We don't have an offical timeline yet, but we're guess-timating the time will be roughly 90 minutes of running time per session. If you are swimming each session that means you will be at the pool quite a bit this weekend... please be mentally prepared for this - don't plan anything in between sessions on Saturday or after the meet on Friday (except lots of resting of course!).

While this meet is going to be only Juneau swimmers, I expect there to be some fast swims both from masters and high schoolers - be ready to race!

Lastly, on Saturday after the meet is over plan on attending some type of masters social - location TBD.

I hope you are all as excited as I am!

-Coach K
